CJI – who are we?

The Centre for Justice Innovation (CJI) is an independent UK charity dedicated to building a justice system that everyone believes is fair and effective.

CJI believe that our justice systems should be focused on solving the issues that drive social harm; that it should be and feel fair in how it treats people; that it should be proportionate in the things it does; and that it should empower people on the frontline to solve the problems their communities face. To achieve this vision, the Centre provides hands-on support to justice practitioners, conducts research into how the systems currently works and how it could work better, promotes evidence-based, innovative justice policy reforms, and shares lessons learned across jurisdictions in the UK and with its sister organisation in the United States.

CJI champions innovation across a range of areas within the justice system, including out-of-court resolutions, family justice reform, gender-responsive approaches, smarter sentencing, and improving fairness and legitimacy in how justice is delivered. It works closely with practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and people with lived experience to drive practical change and develop solutions that address the root causes of harm rather than relying solely on punitive responses.

“Having been through the court system and being left disillusioned, the Centre for Justice Innovation has given me hope in the system.  Knowing there are people like CJI that feel passionately about problem solving courts and actively fighting for them, loudly, is so inspiring and genuinely gives me and many others from my background the hope we need to keep fighting ourselves, thank you” - voice of lived experience
